Why I'm a Patient Gamer
Embracing the Slow Lane in a Fast-Paced Gaming World
At some point, I accidentally became a patient gamer. I’m not exactly sure when or how it happened, but it has been surprisingly liberating. Maybe it was having kids, or my backlog just got too big, or perhaps it was pre-ordering a game that turned out to be a disappointment. Regardless, I’ve come to appreciate the zen-like philosophy of taking gaming at my own pace.
If you are unfamiliar with the term, “patient gaming” is what it sounds like: taking a more relaxed approach to gaming, usually waiting for games to go on sale or for the hype to die down before diving into a new title. Getting games on sale, with all the patches and updates already released, can lead to a more polished and complete experience.
The older I get, the harder it has become to keep up with everything in gaming. The industry thrives on excitement and anticipation, constantly bombarding us with new titles, updates, live-service games, downloadable content, etc. It’s easy to get swept up in this hype cycle, moving from one game to the next, always chasing the next big thing.
I don’t want to disparage the excitement and joy that comes with being part of the gaming zeitgeist. I still follow gaming news and eagerly anticipate certain releases. However, as someone navigating the bustling demands of work, parenting, and the occasional existential crisis about adult responsibilities, it’s been a relief to slow things down. When I hear about a new game, it’s not “How am I going to find time to play this?” but “Is this something I want to play in the future?” It’s a game of wait-and-see that often pays off.
Financially it makes sense too. Games are only getting more expensive and buying them on sale makes a big difference. Platforms like Prime Gaming and the Epic Game Store have been offering free titles for years now, and subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus provide access to a plethora of games. It’s never been a better time to be a patient gamer!
Being a patient gamer is not about missing out; it’s about a mindful approach to gaming. It’s about balancing my passion for gaming with the realities of daily life and choosing to explore the gaming universe at a pace that suits my personal and financial well-being. This journey has taught me patience, appreciation, and the joy of anticipation.
To my fellow gamers, I extend this invitation to join me in the slow lane. Here, the gaming world is not a series of quick stops but a scenic route filled with unexpected delights, hidden treasures, and the freedom to enjoy our games to the fullest.
